2/18/12 Border Patrol Announcement "Agents apprehended two citizens of Guatemala as a result of a vehicle stop near Forks." |
2/18/12 - Why was the vehicle stopped by federal agents? As you know, mysterious traffic stops have been going on for months now. This is just the part I know from searching the web. - Alex

2/13/12 Border Patrol Announcement This morning the Peninsula Daily News reported that the Border Patrol announced that they arrested 16 people in the Blaine Sector last month - two of which were "Mexican nationals in the Forks area" arrested Jan. 21 after a "traffic-stop request for assistance from a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy and a Quinault Tribal Police Department officer."

2/13/12 What happened to the two "Mexican nationals"? How many others were arrested but not reported? What's the relationship between the Border Patrol and the Sheriff and Tribal Police? - Jim

New Border Patrol Announcements - New Format

2/13/12 Jay Cumbow is the new head agent of the Port Angeles station, which covers Clallam and Jefferson counties. Cumbow is reported to have said he wants to "engage in community outreach" and the Blaine Sector has begun to announce arrest reports. For example the Peninsula Daily News reported on 2/13/12 that the Border Patrol announced that they arrested 16 people in the Blaine Sector last month - two of which were "Mexican nationals in the Forks area" arrested Jan. 21 after a "traffic-stop request for assistance from a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy and a Quinault Tribal Police Department officer."

We wonder how this admittedly incomplete report relates to reality. What happened to the two "Mexican nationals"? How many others were arrested but not reported? What's the relationship between the Border Patrol and the Sheriff and Tribal Police?
So we asked community members to Reporting on the BP reporting will tend to make them more honest. They can't not report arrests that they know we know about. We also decided to change the format of this page. Whereas (below) we have been posting any comments we get about Border Patrol sightings or activities, from now on (above) we will try to report the official Border Patrol announcements in the left column and, in the right column provide details, pictures, more information or comments from community members. Many people are afraid to take pictures or in any way antagonize the Border Patrol by following them or asking questions or reporting even what they consider abuses. They see the Border Patrol as an occupying force with terrifying power. But monitoring the Border Patrol and documenting what they do is the best way to keep the "occupying force" honest and accountable. To protect yourself, know your rights, copy down the telephone numbers and review the suggestions on the BP Incident Reports page and let your friends and family know where you are.

6/2/11 Just back from hiking at Mt Walker. About 2:00 PM I was walking down the lower part of the road and was passed by a USBP vehicle moving fast up the road. I waved and they kept on going. No time to get out a camera. - Alex

Secret Federal Police "I question the need for such a large Border Patrol presence," Clallam sheriff, Bill Benedict said at a meeting in Sequim on May 11, 2011 as reported in the Peninsula Daily News. "And the reason I question it is I know their activity. I think they made less than 20 arrests last year." While it is important to have security at the border and patrols to intercept drug smuggling, reported the Sequim Gazzette he thinks the Coast Guard is equipped to handle the latter. Benedict said other than that the Border Patrol agents don’t have much to do. He has sent letters to Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., and Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, both D-Wash., asking them about the increase in Border Patrol presence over the past several years. "I was told from the feds basically that I didn’t have the full picture and not to worry about it," Benedict said. Hmmm ... Maybe that's why they don't want to report their arrests. Maybe we can help out. Let's see what we can find out about what the Border Patrol is doing by gleaning the news and by our own vigilance. Keep in mind they are here to protect us form terrorists and smugglers and - although we don't agree with the policy - harassing and arresting non citizens without proper immigration papers. They are not here to help out local sheriffs and police and, when they do, especially if they offer fancy communications equipment, infrared cameras, long distant listening devices, etc. it looks a lot like cooptation. We are proud of Sheriffs Bill Benedict and Mike Brasfield and the Port Townsend Police Department for resisting this pressure. But can it last?
