    Opportunity for Comment
    Draft Environmental Impact Statement
    2/28/11
    BREAKING NEWS:

The Peninsula Daily News for taday, Feb. 28th, has a notice in the classifieds of a 30-day comment period on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement released last Friday, which says the new Border Patrol Station being built at the Port Angeles Eagle's Club property, will have minimal or no impact on the environment, cultural, or social environment, economy, etc. This is the last chance to comment before they close the real estate deal to buy the Eagles property!

I am including a link to the actual 127-page EA statement on the internet, and it is also available at the Port Angeles Library and the Sequim Library.

You can get the summary of it in the first few pages, in the middle somewhere is a map of the proposed facility - with canine quarters, carport for 34 cars and outside parking for 50 more cars, etc.--then skip through to the last few pages to the Appendixes (pages 80 on) and you'll see the actual sign-in list for that bogus public meeting that was in the paper the same morning as the meeting was held, and the actual comments from that meeting and from all of us that we sent in last time.

Pro and con statments last time were about equal (around 30-35 each)- we need to get more statements against the facility this time so read the impact sections on social and cultural especially and please fax or mail some specific comments!

One thing I did notice is that an "8 ft high chain link fence and a 40 ft radio tower" have no impact on visual aesthetics. The details on traffic accidents at that intersection of 101 showed that Border Patrol would have many cars trying to cross 101 and go West and that is where quite a few accidents happen. The Statement also says there will be future increases in the number of agents and in detention space. And that most of the labor and materials for the remodel and building will be brought in from elsewhere! So even those local businesses who think they will get a short term profit are mistaken! They also say that the facility will have no impact on the creek and ravine at the western edge of the property.

The whole statement is based on the false assumption that we need more border security, yet the Dept. of Homeland Security will not release ANY numbers on their activities, stops, arrests, detentions, and deportations. There has been a decrease in crime locally and there is no outcry from the public for more law enforcement. In fact we see the Border Patrol harassing our friends, families and neighbors and BP bus boardings and traffic stops violating our civil liberties. People do want true immigration reform and do not want to live in a militarized zone.

The Draft of the "FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS" is available on line. Draft EA And FONSI For The Proposed Construction, Operation, And Maintenance Of DHS U.S. Customs And Border Protection U.S. Border Patrol Station Port Angeles, Clallam County, Washington

This document will be available for one month from 28-Feb-2011. It's worth reading as it has all the testimony - almost all pro Border Patrol - from a meeting in July, 2010.
